SUPPORT WATER CONSERVATION AND PREVENT ROOT CROWDING






          Work with a landscape professional if necessary,

          to select new plants and record these -- along with

          all existing plants -- on ARC Checklist #19's required

          scaled design drawing and the supporting Plant & Tree

          List
detail worksheets.


          Follow design guidelines DG 6.1.1 through DG 6.1.11
         
        
  for aesthetic shrub and ground cover plant location.




          If this project is considered too small to warrant

          applying for ARC approval and/or updating your lot's

          landscape design drawing (check DG 2.9 requirements) ....


          I suggest trying out the below calculations to find ways

          to avoid overcrowded root systems and unnecessary

          irrigation, whether or not you've decided to limit planting

          to DG minimal 50% PA.

         






CALCULATION SUMMARY



A.  Measure all yard areas per current DG definitions.



B.  Add two columns for plant size and SF coverage 
     to the Checklist #19 Plant & Tree List detail worksheets:

                1)  Mature size (H' x W') from DG-Appendix A, Acceptable Plant List

                2)  Expected plant growth SF (No. x PCSF)
                     number of plants times the PCSF conversion table value for plant's width




C.  Keep 3 separate Plant & Tree List detail worksheets for
     tracking expected SF coverage in each plantable area (PA): 

                1)  existing plants,
                2)  additional plants for DG minimal coverage,
                3)  desired optional plants.   
  

 
D.   Calculate how many plants are still needed in this PA
      to meet current DG 6.2 minimal coverage of 50% at maturity.



E.   Calculate the SF area left in this PA for optional plants 
      decorative rock, boulders, and/or bark filler per DG 6.2.



F.   Calculate how many new five and one or two-gallon plant
      containers are required for this PA per DG 6.1.

CALCULATION DETAIL  --  For Each Plantable Yard Area

A.    Measure the following yard areas in square feet (SF)
             according to current DG (Design Guideline) definitions.



                 These yard areas are used on the current ARC worksheets.  
      
​                    Generally, there is a separate yard area YA for each side of driveway
                  (A and B),  and for side yard (C) if this is an exterior lot.  So, we might 
                  have 1 - 3 separate sets of the below measurements and calculations, 
                  depending on the extent of our project.

1)  Mature Size (H' x W')

This is the expected growth data used on the ARC-required
scaled landscape diagram showing the location and setback
of each plant.
          
We can find that data on our DG Appendix A, Accepted Plant
& Tree List,
or ask local nurseries, or check Internet landscape 
sites.

Adjust 'W' for shrubs or ground-cover maintained differently.

2)  "Expected Plant SF (No. x PCSF)" 

We will be calculating the total growth area SF to be expected
for each type of plant at maturity. 

This is similar to the way total SF area is calculated for landscape boulders
on ARC worksheets.

     
Total expected plant SF coverage =
No. of Plants  x  the PCSF conversion table value
corresponding to this plant's width = Mature Size 'W'.

Example:
Calculate total SF area coverage for five, three-foot wide Nandina plants.
   No. plants  =  5
    W'  =  3'
    PCSF  =  7  SF   This is the value in the 'Plant Coverage
                               SF Table' corresponding to width = 3'.


   Expected Coverage  =  5  x  7 SF  =  35  SF total area for 5 Nandina plants


I suggest adding a copy of the PCSF conversion table
to bottom of plant detail worksheets for easy reference.


C.   Keep 3 separate Plant & Tree List detail worksheets
             for each PA (plantable area):


              1) 'Existing Plants', 

              2) 'NEW Required Plants'  to meet DG minimum 50% PA,

              3) 'NEW Optional Plants'
if desired.           

          

              Adjust and track the below totals for expected growth SF

              at maturity on these three Plant & Tree List detail worksheets,

              as plants are added or removed in STEP D and STEP E
